Dodger Stadium Holds Event To Help Victims of Japan

On Tuesday, March 15th from 5 a.m.  -7 p.m.  the Dodgers and NBC LA will  hold a “drive-through” relief event at Dodger Stadium tomorrow to help raise money for the American Red Cross Japan earthquake and tsunami relief efforts.

Dodger alumni Bobby Castillo, Kenny Landreaux, Rudy Law, Al Ferrara, Jimmy Campanis and Derrel Thomas and NBC LA on-air personalities will be on hand to take donations.

Donors who give $20 or more will each receive two tickets to an upcoming Spring Training exhibition game at Dodger Stadium.

The Dodgers have a long-standing history with Japan dating back to the 1950s. Current Dodgers from Japan include pitcher Hiroki Kuroda and three minor league players. Nine members of the front office are also originally from Japan.

IBF Super Middleweight Champ Lucian Bute Takes On Brian Magee

Unbeaten International Boxing Federation (IBF) Super Middleweight Champion Lucian But e (27-0, 22 KOs) will take on former European titleholder Brian Magee 4-3-1, 24 KOs), of Belfast, Ireland. Bute is defending is 168 pound crown. The fight will be live on Showtime, Saturday March 19th at10pm ET/PT. The two will fighting Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada.

Bute has won all but one of his title defenses by knockout, including four consecutive victories inside the distance. The immensely popular 31-year-old Romanian-born fighter lives in Montreal , where he routinely draws a sellout crowd.The 6-foot, 2 ½-inch natural lefthander, who has supreme counter-punching ability, speed and power, is coming off a ninth-round knockout of Jesse Brinkley on Oct. 15 in Montreal . Bute, who is training in Miami for this southpaw vs. southpaw showdown, is not taking the Irishman lightly.

“He has a good right hook, he’s aggressive, he will never quit and he can punch. I can’t underestimate him and I have to be well-prepared. I respect him as a fighter, but I fully expect to rain on his St. Patrick’s Day parade”.

The 35-year-old Magee has not lost since 2006 and is also riding an impressive streak of four consecutive knockouts.  Magee has won six in a row and nine of 10 since his loss to Froch. Ranked No. 8 by the IBF, the 6-foot southpaw feels Bute is not looking past him.

“I don’t think ( Bute ) will take me for granted,” Magee said. “I think he will prepare for me like a champion. Without a doubt he’s the best in the division right now. He’s a hard fighter to have a plan against because he’s good at everything. He’s going to go back and go forward. He’s a very worthy world champion.

Pablo Sarmiento: Sergio Will Be Remembered In The History Of Boxing

Boxing trainer Pablo Sarmiento worked Sergio Martinez’s corner when he defended the title against junior middleweight titlist Sergiy Dzinziruk. Martinez’s main trainer, Gabriel Sarmiento did not attend for personal reasons.

In this EsNewsReporting video, we talked with Pablo about how he thinks Martinez will be remembered in the history of boxing. “Before all they would say about Argentina was Carlos Monzon , but now Sergio’s name is mentioned,” said Pablo.  Monzon was an Argentine professional boxer who held the world middleweight title for 7 years, during which he successfully defended the title 14 times.

Pablo also explains why he thinks Floyd Mayweather is a better boxer than Manny Pacquiao.
