I am aware of the fact that a lot of people don’t believe BoxRec to be a reputable source of information when it comes to posting upcoming and signed future fights, but to be honest it hardly fails. Thus if BoxRec posts a newly scheduled bout, I tend to believe that the information is correct and somehow verified.
According to BoxRec, despite us hearing numerous rumors that Richard Schaefer is working on getting Mayweather Jr. vs. Canelo fight organized, Mayweather Jr. is scheduled to fight Robert Guerrero on May 4, 2013 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Surprised? I am.
In a way I understand why Mayweather Jr. would pick Guerrero for his next fight, after all, easy money is hard to turn down. A fight against Robert is a low risk challenge, and I highly doubt that there is a solid number of boxing fans who believe that Guerrero will come out victorious.
As a matter of fact, what are the chances that Guerrero will even look good against Floyd?
I truly wish Floyd would skip Guerrero and go for someone more competitive. Don’t get me wrong, I like Guerrero a lot. I don’t mean to belittle his achievements or the great skills that he possesses inside the ring, but there is a proper challenge, a fair level of competition for every athlete, and in the hurt business that boxing is, this should be respected.
Maybe Guerrero and Khan can meet soon if Khan is unable to secure a rematch against Garcia, but fighting Mayweather Jr. is a career suicide for Robert.
My prediction if this fight materializes: Mayweather Jr. dominates in the most obvious fashion. I would not rule out a knockout sometime during the mid-rounds of the fight. Floyd is simply too quick for Guerrero; his footwork is better, his hands are quicker, and most importantly the ring experience/IQ will simply be too much for The Ghost, and I believe we will start noticing this in the very first round of the fight.
