Bob Arum: “No. 5 is now the biggest fight in boxing, bigger than Pacquiao-Mayweather”

Which fight is bigger: Pacquiao vs. Marquez V, or Pacquiao vs. Mayweather Jr.?

I assume that most boxing fans will agree that despite it being a very hard question at this point in time, after Pacquiao’s knockout loss, Mayweather Jr. vs. Pacquiao still takes a clear lead in its significance.

Bob Arum on the other hand, is convinced otherwise:

“No. 5 is now the biggest fight in boxing, bigger than Pacquiao-Mayweather,” said Arum.

Sorry Bob, even though I belie that Marquez and Pacquiao meeting again will be a tremendous event, with a more than a healthy profit, Mayweather Jr. is still a bigger name than Marquez or Pacquiao, thus from a popularity standpoint, it would crush the expected numbers of No.5.

As far as the idea of milking this while the hype is at it’s peak, I do agree with Arum about organizing the fifth fight against Marquez first, and then sometime next year, win or lose, Manny and Floyd could still bring in record numbers if they fight.

Arum also touched on the possibility of Manny vs. Marquez in April, shutting down any rumors that it might come true:

“The idea we’d be ready to fight April 20 is ludicrous.”

While I disagree that the idea is ludicrous, it’s actually very doable, I can see how it would be a less than optimal financial decision.
