As you may or may not know, amateur National Champion boxer Alexis Urbina of Phoenix Arizona was beaten in his home and died of his injuries last week.
17 year-old Alexis was planning to fight in the Olympics in 2016, and recently traveled to the Ukraine to represent Team USA in the Klitchko Brothers tournament. It’s a huge blow to the boxing community – he was a good kid, who stayed out of trouble and worked hard. He had a very bright future.
His sister, Sulem Urbina Soto is also a boxer, and has her own aspirations of competing in the 2016 Olympics for Mexico. She and the rest of the Urbina family are struggling with funeral costs, and a number of initiatives have been set up to help. I know the family would be very appreciative.
There is a go fund me account, where people can donate directly. To donate, they just need to visit http://www.gofundme.com/Alexis-Urbina.
Brandon Rios and Garden City Boxing Gym have generously donated a championship belt signed by Rios. It is being auctioned on Rios’ Facebook and Instagram pages, with all proceeds going to the Urbina family. The auction ends tomorrow.
Boxing photographer bStunt has donated a signed Lucas Matthysse glove that is currently being auctioned on eBay.
