Mayweather gave boxing a face when the sport's fan-base needed enthusing – via any means necessary.

Floyd Mayweather Junior‘s contribution to the sweet science of boxing takes two forms – one as an era-calibrating Pound-for-Pound ring talent; the other as the de facto custodian of the sport’s marketability within an increasingly congested sports entertainment landscape. Comparisons to the likes of Jack Johnson, Jack Dempsey & yes to Mohammed Ali in this regard may at first appear unpalatable to historians & students of boxing’s fabled past though I venture that whilst each naturally livened up the public fervor for their competitive era none did so in the face of such dwindling mainstream public interest in the sweet science.

Perhaps the closest comparison – though of an entirely different qualitative edge – one can draw to the Mayweather effect in terms of reviving or carrying the sport within the mainstream through an historic lull in the sport’s (or in this case the premier weight division’s) popularity is with the at times dynamic & at times frankly demented exploits of one Iron Mike Tyson from 1986 through his eventual retirement in 2005.

With all due respect to Victor Ortiz – having an Ortiz fight among the top grossing non-heavyweight fights in boxing history would remain simply unimaginable sans Money May‘s drawing power.

Mayweather has participated in all three of the largest grossing non-heavyweight pay-per-view cards in history:

  • Mayweather vs. Oscar De La Hoya ($136,853,700)
  • Mayweather vs. Ortiz ($78,440,000)
  • Mayweather vs. Sugar Shane Mosley ($78,330,000)

Savior of boxing is perhaps hyperbolic & not to mention an entirely¬†unnecessary¬†burden for any fighter to bare but Floyd Mayweather‘s contribution to the renewed mainstream thirst for the sport is of an undeniably immense magnitude.
