RIP Genaro “El Chicanito” Hernandez

Genaro “El Chicanito” Hernandez passed away yesterday after a battle with cancer. He was only 45 years old.

He was a great champion and a fan favorite with a record of  only 38-2-1 with 17 knockouts, and only Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Oscar De La Hoya beat him.

“El Chicanito” ruled the 130-pound junior lightweight division from 1991 to 1998.

In 2009 the former world champion was diagnosed with a form of cancer detected behind his right eye. Hernandez was undergoing both chemotherapy and radiation treatments in hopes of eradicating the deadly tumor.

Hernandez who lived in Mission Viejo, is survived by his wife, Liliana , his two children and his five brothers and sisters (one of whom is a boxing trainer) along with  his father Joe Rudy Hernandez.
