Hamilton’s Believe It Or Not Of Boxing

Believe it or Not of Boxing History

James “Buster” Douglas is already in one Hall of Fame – the Coffeyville Red Ravens Men’s Basketball Hall of Fame. Douglas played basketball for the Coffeyville Community College Red Ravens in Kansas as a forward before commencing his professional boxing career. Father William “Dynamite” Douglas was a contender at middleweight and light-heavyweight back in the 70s, fighting both Willie Monroe and Matthew Saad Muhammad.

On 18 March 1997 Samoa’s Jimmy Thunder knocks out Crawford Grimsley with his very first punch, the fight lasts 1.5 seconds plus the count & we have a new world record for fastest win by KO.

Michael Moorer scored knockout wins in all of his first 26 professional bouts.

Cassius Clay/Mohammed Ali‘s habit of boasting before his triumphs was inspired, by his own admission, by “Gorgeous” George Wagner, a professional wrestling champion in the Los Angeles area in the 1940s & 1950s.

On December 8, 1980, during a Monday Night Football game between the Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots, boxing’s most famous reporter of all-time Howard Cosell stunned millions of football supporters when he announced the murder of John Lennon. Cosell performed regular announcing work on the NFL telecast.

For road work Marvellous Marvin Hagler ran in army boots, stating that trainers were “sissy shoes.” Hagler would run most of the way backwards to simulate movements in the boxing ring. Though, strangely, he was one of the most attacking fighters of his generation.

Antonio Tarver made his professional boxing debut aged 28 on February 18, 1997.

Floyd Patterson ran the Stockholm Marathon in 1982 & 1983 together with former rival Ingemar Johansson.

Floyd Patterson: “It’s like being in love with a woman. She can be unfaithful, she can be mean, she can be cruel, but it doesn’t matter. If you love her, you want her, even though she can do you all kinds of harm. It’s the same with me and boxing. It can do me all kinds of harm but I love it.”
