Promoters: Leonard Ellerbe (Mayweather Promotions) / Richard Schaefer (Golden Boy Promotions)

Mayweather-Alvarez beat the record live gate with $20,003,150, according to the Nevada State Athletic Commission, surpassing the $18,419,200 Mayweather’s split-decision win over De La Hoya managed. This of course negates inflation which presents a far more telling hysterical picture.

It’s definitely the highest-grossing pay per view of all time,” said Richard Schaefer. “There’s a possibility that it could be the highest numbers of buys as well, but we’re still collecting data. I don’t want to make the statement that it’s going to surpass the buys [2.5 million] as well, unless I’m absolutely sure.

The way this is looking, we are ahead of those reports. We’re just going to have to see where it’s going to end up,” said Richard Schaefer. “It is looking very strong, but I hope that I’ll have more concrete information by the end of this week.

In Mexico, eight out of every 10 households with a T.V. in Mexico were watching the fight,” said Schaefer. “They had 78.4 percent of all households in Mexico where the fight was being watched. It was the highest-rated boxing program on television in the history of Mexico.

Closed-circuit tickets sold at $100.00 a pop totalled “well over 26,500 in Las Vegas alone,” confirmed Schaefer.

If they said Mayweather has hand-picked his opponent, then my team’s done a fucking good job. They’re supposed to hand-pick my opponents. Everything is supposed to go easy for me. Life is supposed to be easy. Who wants to go through life in a hard way and a tough way. If I’m able to hand-pick my opponents and make 60 or 70 or 80 million or 100 million dollars, then keep doing it.

Contemporary Economic Perspective

The Nevada State Athletic Commission says that the Garcia vs. Khan fight sold 3,147 tickets, with 3,364 given away (comps), and 737 unsold for a total gate of $426,152.00. Khan had a purse of $950,000.00 & Garcia $520,000.00.

One day after accepting a title fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, James Kirkland pulled out of the fight in June of 2012. The reason given was a combination of Kirkland’s right shoulder problems and dissatisfaction over his purse, which was said to be close to $1 million.

His answer was that James could fight later in the year, but that it would have to be for $2.5 million. This guy is obviously telling him he is getting screwed on the money, which is not the case. So James is out of the fight. I can’t get him $2.5 million. That’s ridiculous. I’d love to get him that much because I get a percentage, but it’s not reality. James is a great kid but he’s getting really bad advice. And if he can’t fight, he shouldn’t fight at any price. So it’s just crazy. It’s totally insane. We told James, ‘If you’re healthy, fight. If you’re not healthy, don’t fight.’ But don’t make it about the money because the money he was getting for the fight was very, very good money.Cameron Dunkin on dealing with Curtis Meeks, a former pro, who Dunkin said had began serving as an adviser to Kirkland.

According to the New York State Athletic Commission, Donaire made $1.32 million & Rigondeaux a career-high $750,000 purse for their bout.

HBO World Championship Boxing‘s Andre Ward vs. Chad Dawson at Oakland’s Oracle Arena sold 7,611 tickets, for a gate of $706,469.00. 1,308 tickets were comped, i.e. given away.

Attendance was 16,746, according to Golden Boy Promotions executive Richard Schaefer, who claimed more than 25,000 closed circuit tickets were purchased too.

Mayweather remains unbeaten in 45 fights in a fight that was fought at a 152-pound limit. Alvarez weighed in at that weight, but was an unofficial 165 pounds when he got into the ring while Mayweather, who weighed in at 150 1/2 pounds, was an even 150. “When I woke up this morning, I was 146 pounds, so I had to call my chef and get something in my system,” Mayweather said.

I thought it was a joke,” Mayweather said when asked about the scoring.

Everyone in the MGM Grand arena was shocked by C.J. Ross’s scoring … especially Floyd Mayweather himself who mouthed the words, “What the fuck?” when her 114-114 score was read out.

Mayweather’s supremacy showed in the final punch statistics. He landed 232 of 505 thrown while Alvarez went just 117 of 526.

The fight was one of the richest ever — if not the richest ever — with a live gate of $20 million and at least another $100 million from pay-per-view. Tickets were so hot that celebrities were actually offering to buy them and some tickets were being offered online for as much as $29,000. The fight was on free TV in Mexico, and some estimates were that 70 million people would watch.

Tickets went on sale on June 25th with prices of $2k, $1,500, $1k, $600, $350 and the event sold out within 24 hours. A website that tracks secondary ticket markets, seatgeek.com, says that as of Thursday, this fight is driving the highest boxing resale price ever, at $2,028. It said that the average price for floor seat resale is $10,629 and one seat went for $23,554. Promoters say they have sold 25,000 seats in Las Vegas for closed-circuit telecasts at other MGM properties. That’s at $100 a pop.

Mayweather-Alvarez is unlikely to beat Mayweather-De La Hoya in buys though could well in revenue, given the price was $64.95 (or $74.95 for HD). $15 to $25 more than the De La Hoya fight. The fight did set an all-time gate record for a boxing event with ticket sales above $18.6 million.

The series finale of the television sitcom Friends aired on NBC in the United States on May 6, 2004, when it was watched by 52.46 million viewers.

Boxing is a phenomenal manifestation of the evolutionary spirit; it is a discipline & entertainment form which should own a rightful abode among the most momentous cultural proceedings of the socio-historical discourse of any epoch – but this will not happen whilst the sport alienates itself from current & potential future devotees via a short-sighted, over-priced, over-hyped & by definition exclusive interface with an increasingly disgruntled & disinterested wider public.
