Racism Has No Place in Society Let Alone Sport Let Alone Boxing

Roach’s Racist Outburst Indefensible by Laughable Lies

The unsavoury events caught for posterity by a room full of cameras in a Macau boxing gym showcase a sad reality – racism isn’t dead; it has merely camouflaged itself. Camouflaged under even handed journalism & wishful naivety & complicit ignorance.

An ugly scene erupted between the teams of boxers Manny Pacquiao and Brandon Rios on Wednesday as the camps exchanged homophobic and racial slurs during a physical altercation over a dispute regarding access to a gym.” reported Kevin Iole.

Now whilst I have huge respect & regard for Kevin, this characterisation of events is simply false. All racial slurs were directed in one direction – & aimed at multiple ethnicities within the Rios camp. And what a pair of ethnicities to slur! Perhaps the largest & most passionate fan-base in the sport of boxing in Mexicans (& by implication Mexican-Americans) & an ethnic group who have had a huge impact on the historical popularization & discourse of the sport in the Jewish community.

“The first thing he said was, ‘Get out of here you piece of shit. That was the first thing he told me. I was like, ‘What?’ He was like, ‘Get the fuck out of here.’ He called me a piece of shit. Then he called my friend ‘a fucking Mexican,’ and he called Elie , ‘a fucking Jew.’ What the fuck is that?” Robert Garcia

Roach denied making any racist comments and said he simply asked Garcia to leave. Consultation with various tapes of the incident Roach is clearly heard saying, among other things, “get that Jew motherfucker out of here too“.

Roach then, laughably for anyone who has seen & heard the footage that what clearly sounded like “Mexican motherfucker” was actually “are you the Mexican tough guy“? This was followed by the fib of all fibs – “get that Jew motherfucker out of here too” (clearly audible on the video) was somehow actually Roach asking Elie (a man who he has been interviewed by several dozen times) “Are you the Jewish reporter?” Roach claims he asked because “I just don’t know (Seckbach’s) your name.

This video shot in 2009 might refresh Freddie’s memory (as I mentioned one of a few dozen such occasions Elie has interviewed Freddie)…

One only hopes that for the sake of the sport Freddie Roach shows more forthrightness & honesty when he gets a call from the Anti-Defamation League.
