Brave New World for Boxing’s Elite?

Pound-for-Pound Top 20

After the now hotly disputed Pacquiao vs. Bradley fight we’re left with a newish era in the sport of boxing with, commercially speaking at least, the dissolution of a bi-polar ecosystem at the very zenith of the sport. The effective Cold War quagmire of the chronically abortive Mayweather vs. Pacquiao promotion will mercifully give way to wider & more varied permutations within boxing’s most talent laden division(s) [140lbs through 154lbs]. Manny Pacquiao‘s first loss since 2005’s first meeting with legendary Mexican warrior Erik Morales – regardless of your feelings on the validity of the manner in which it arrived – will usher in a period of better sporting times ahead at the highest echelons of the sport.

That Floyd Mayweather has reclaimed his status as the world’s premier boxer is now beyond sane reproach – surely even those claiming a Pacquiao near shut-out victory against Desert Storm must assimilate the reality of the contrasting trajectories of the two future Hall of Famers careers.

Elsewhere Juan Manuel Marquez‘s stellar & consistent excellence is rewarded with his displacement of long time rival Pacquiao at #2 on my list.

Criteria for inclusion within the Pound for Pound Top 20 list below include: a minimum of 20 wins as a professional; must have fought once in the preceding 12 months; must have won in the preceding 18 months & must not be suspended, have admitted to or be under licence withholding status for doping related offenses.
